"Synthesis" implies a fusion of disparate elements into a new entity. This work is meant to be experienced as a whole. Turning every corner should bring something unexpected, like a journey to some exotic locale, unknown and perhaps dangerous. Through scale I play with the notion of stepping into a space, like "Passage" - with its mountainous peaks looming over an ominous gorge. Or catching a glimpse of something fast and fleeting as in "Jam". There are moments of light, bright colorful flip fun butted up against dark rich nocturnal nebuli. By painting nostalgically I pay heed to a lush, romantic past that at times seems dirty and arcane. Then I switch over to imagery and technique that implies more futuristic visions of high tech glam and sci fi polish, glimmering with possibility while also appearing alien and scary. There is an interweaving within this back and forth. A fusion or overlap - a darkness in the soft folds, a glimmer in the watery chasm. |
